Improved Prediction Estimation Based H.264 to HEVC Intra Transcoding

HEVC achieves significant coding efficiency improvement which is the best choice of 3D content but at a cost of much higher computation complexity. We propose a prediction estimation based H.264 to HEVC intra transcoder which can reach the high speed up for CU splitting with minor loss of coding efficiency for Intra picture. Our proposed method uses not only the intra prediction mode, prediction direction and other information from H.264 decoder but also the prediction estimation on decoding picture. The SVM classifiers were trained and do the CU splitting decision. Experiment results show that about 1.71 speed up for intra CU splitting decision and only 0.03dB loss on BD-PSNR.
